The setting is directed during Japans colonial period Invading Korea. During this time ideals clashed against their will to liberate their country.



There are many representations of death that follow the couple throughout the drama. Which is ironic considering the couples death and the title of the drama.

The death of patriotism which is represented by Korean officers working under the Japanese Government.

The freedom of language, which is represented by everyone only allowed to speak Japanese.

Barefoot suicide
There is a custom where people take off their shoes before entering the afterlife as to not track dirt and such into their ethereal destination.
